Summer calls for many things including ocean swimming without a wetsuit, beach bonfires, late night bike rides, and as much stone fruit as one can possibly eat. But to me, what most represents summer is ice cream. Who cares if you want to have ice cream for lunch dessert, or even if you want to have ice cream instead of lunch? It’s summer, and so it’s okay. And when you’re at the market next time, make sure you check out the summer tent, Na Pali Coast Frozen Organics. They’re only here for the summer! And this isn’t just your average ice cream. It’s enhanced ice cream. It’s organic shave ice, Hawaii style. And it’s sure to be your new favorite summer indulgence.
I had the chance to interview owners Quentin Sponselee and Romany Huoth about their business. More can be found here, but as far as my questions go, please enjoy:
Questin: When did you start your business?
Answer: In September, 2013.
Q: How long have you been at the market?
A: Our first day was June 8 and we’ll be here all summer!
Q: Describe your business in one sentence.
A: Organic Hawaiian Shave Ice and Exotic Ice Creams
Q: What is your favorite item on your “menu”?
A: Everything is Awesome but the Mac Nut Ice Cream and Mauna Loa Shave Ice combo with Coconut Milk drizzle is RIDICULOUS!
Q: What is the most popular item on the “menu”?
A: The Hawaiian combo (banana, coconut, pineapple flavors) with Macadamia Nut ice cream at the bottom and a snow cap drizzle of coconut milk. The ice cream in the bottom with snow cap drizzle on top is called the Aloha Works!
Q: Do you have any new items you’re planning on featuring in the near future?
A: Oh definitely! We are planning to bring more ice cream and sorbet flavors using exotic fruit combinations.
Q: Tell me a surprising fact about yourself or your business.
A: All our shave syrups are organic, gluten free and vegan. We make our very own ice creams and sorbet (vegan option) using 100% organic ingredients. Our inspiration for the business came from our backpacking trip through the Na Pali Coast in Kauai.
Q: What is another vendor at the market that you frequent? What do you get there?
A: We just started but so far I am a glutton for Authentic Belgian Waffles and Fries and the guy there is Legit!
Q: Is there anything else you’d like the blog community to know?
A: We are a local business started here in SD inspired by the beauty and flavors of Hawaii and if you have never had them you need to see what you have been missing! We are very happy and excited to be part of the Hillcrest market family and hope to see you soon!
We are so happy to have you joining us for the summer! What a treat!
I hope everyone has a chance to try these unique flavor combinations of this islander treat.
Enjoy your week!
