• Vendor Profile Project: Bitchin’ Sauce!

The Bitchin’ Sauce tent seems like a farmers market icon to me. It’s fun, local, and offers samples galore. It cracks me up every time I go over there that the owners, brothers Starr Edwards and Ryan Smith, are so on. What do I mean by on? Well, no matter what time it is, no matter how many people are at their tent, they seem to have smiles on their faces and they successfully incorporate the word “bitchin'” into every sentence. For example, “Have a “bitchin'” day!” It’s amazing. I could never do that- be so on. But their excited personalities lure people in week after week to sample and purchase their delicious sauce/dip.

What is Bitchin’ Sauce? Here, from their website:

Bitchin’ Sauce is a vegan, gluten-free, almond-based, savory sauce that is rich in nutrients and packed with flavor. It’s smooth and creamy consistency makes it perfect for dipping vegetables and chips, spreading on sandwiches or wraps, or smothering over your favorite savory foods. Bitchin’ and saucy. . . .  Get it in ya!

I asked Starr some questions about Bitchin’ Sauce, and here’s what I got…

Question: When did you start your business? How long have you been at the market?

Answer: We began in 2010. Started in Hillcrest in 2011.

Q: Describe your business in one sentence.

    A: Bitchin’ and Saucy.

Q: What is your favorite item on your “menu”?

A: The Bitchin’ Brigade likes to keep it old school. Original Bitchin’ sauce and the Original Bitchin’ Bar are still our favorites….bitchin’ comfort food.

Q: What is the most popular item on the “menu”?

    A: Chipotle Bitchin’ Sauce!

Q: Do you have any new items you’re planning on featuring in the near future?

A: We have seasonal flavors every couple months (Ranch, Roasted Red Pepper, etc.) and every quarter will are doing Bitchin’ Phantom Flavors – super limited quantities and only at Farmers’ markets. Chighostle is one of these. We are also debuting new bar flavors at the Farmers’ Market every month or so.

Q: Tell me a surprising fact about yourself or your business.

A: Family Secrets. I would tell you, but then I’d have to marry you.

Q: What is another vendor at the market that you frequent? What do you get there?

    A: Happy Pantry Bucha! Everyday.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like the blog community to know?

    A: Stay Bitchin’ you beauties!

See? Like I said, they find a way to incorporate the phrase “bitchin'”, into their regular vernacular. It’s amazing. I love it.

There are a few other things I love about Bitchin’ Sauce…

#1 is their Bitchin’ Bowls. If you haven’t had one yet at the market, here is a recipe from their website:

    THE BITCHIN’ BREAKFAST BOWL:

BASICALLY THIS IS WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE BITCHIN’ BOWL, BUT IT’S ALL EGGED OUT!

THIS TASTY LITTLE NUMBER WILL NOT ONLY STICK TO THOSE LITTLE RIBLETTS OF YOURS, BUT IT IS A NUTRIENT PACKED BOWL OF FLAVOR THAT WILL ROCK YOU!

BASE LAYER: BROWN RICE OR QUINOA AND BLACK BEANS

SAUCE LAYER: SMOTHER THE CRAP OUT OF THE BASE LAYER WITH YOUR CHOICE OF BITCHIN’ SAUCE. WE RECOMMEND EITHER THE ORIGINAL OR CHIPOTLE.

VEGETATION LAYER: FLOATING ON THE SEA OF SAUCE, YOU WILL WANT TO ADD SOME FRESH CHOPPED TOMATO, SLICED AVOCADO, AND SLICED JALAPENO. (YOU CAN ALWAYS BE BITCHIN’ AND ADD AS MANY SUCCULENT INGREDIENTS AS YOU WOULD LIKE)

SUMMIT LAYER: GENTLY PLACE TWO BEAUTIFULLY POACHED LITTLE EGGIES ON THE JUNGLE OF VEGETATION.

TOPPER LAYER: DUST THE SUMMIT WITH FRESH CHOPPED CILANTRO, CORN CHIPS AND SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HOT SAUCE.

#2, I also love, as Starr mentioned, that Bitchin’ Sauce keeps the Farmers Market customers at the top of their customer list, offering us special, fun, unique flavors of their almond based sauce. Bitchin’ Sauce may have made it into grocery stores, but they still keep the farmers market customer in mind.

#3, and lastly, I love that Bitchin’ Sauce expanded into bars. The bars are incredible- a great source of energy and nutrition. My favorite is the strawberry flavor. Now we can get our sweet and savory fix from this one Bitchin’ tent!

See you tomorrow at the market!
